Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, a traveling circus in a European country finds itself stranded in a nation that has embraced fascism. Meanwhile, Isaac, the tightrope walker, falls in love with the mermaid, the star of the circus’s new act. Isaac has another talent besides tightrope walking: he can tell when people are about to die just by looking at their faces.
